Knoxville, Tenn. - February 12, 2009 - It may be the baby of Sea Ray's Sport Cruiser line, but that doesn't mean the new 230 Sundancer® falls short of the company's demanding standards. This easy to own and operate boat sleeps up to four people in a V-berth and mid-stateroom, and features a social cockpit layout with a cleverly designed portside lounger that doubles as a conversation area.
The 230 will replace the venerable 240 Sundancer, which has sold a remarkable 734 units during its production life. So, owners can be sure that Sea Ray worked hard to create a worthy successor. Starting in the cockpit, there's a long portside lounger with one backrest that faces aft and another that faces the helm. The result is a triangular configuration that lets two guests sit comfortably and talk with each other and the driver while the boat is under way.
To the rear, an aft bench sits within reach of a carry-on cooler with designated storage. When the 230 is at rest and the driver can swivel around, the entire cockpit becomes one big, loose circle that's ideal for conversation and entertainment. A safe, durable acrylic transom door leads back to the integral/extended swim platform with four-step swim ladder. Owners can store lines and fenders in the transom "trunk" and a hawsehole makes hook-up of the optional shore power cables a snap.
The sporty helm console is another fine example of style and substance in action, highlighted by a black coral dash panel and SmartCraft® instrumentation with built-in engine diagnostics. All the Sea Ray standards are here: low-glare night lighting, chrome bezels, power-assisted steering wheel with black spokes and polished centerpiece, Sony® AM/FM/CD stereo. There's even space set aside for an optional Navman 5500 chartplotter with 5" LCD display.
The companionway door to port of the helm has wide, molded fiberglass steps that lead up to the walkthrough windshield and foredeck. This area is protected by a welded stainless steel bow rail and provides access to the anchor locker. Add an optional remote-controlled spotlight to assist in nighttime cruising. A deck hatch provides access to the cabin and also allows ventilation below.
Speaking of the cabin, it offers more space than owners would imagine in a 24'6" boat. Along with the aforementioned overhead hatch, three opening portholes draw in natural light and air. The V-berth gives cruising owners plenty of storage in a hanging locker, side shelves and compartments below the cushions. The mid-stateroom aft includes a second double bunk that's perfect for the kids, or it can be used as a large storage hold for extra cruising provisions.
Whipping up an onboard meal is made simple by a functional galley with countertop, molded fiberglass sink, single-burner stove, trash receptacle, and storage above and below. A portable head, vanity with sink and pullout sprayer, shower curtain, mirror, and opening porthole round out the amenities in the cabin's full fiberglass head compartment.
Whether owners are on an extended cruise or just out for a day on the lake, the 230 can be counted on for a reliable ride thanks to its standard MerCruiser® 5.0 MPI Bravo® I gas sterndrive (260 hp - 194 kW). Gas engine options range up to 320 horsepower, and unlike most boats in its size range, the 230 can even be equipped with diesel power: a Yanmar® 6BYZ-220 sterndrive (220 hp - 162 kW).
Sea Ray tried to keep things simple with the 230 Sundancer, and as a result, many of the options are available in a single Overnight Package, including a camper top and curtains, air conditioning/heating, microwave, refrigerator, shore power, cockpit table, dinette table, and six-gallon water heater. And of course, a full membership in the Sea Ray Owners ClubTM, which provides a variety of cost-saving benefits and invitations to members-only events, is standard. Welcome to the family, indeed.
