Knoxville, Tenn. - April 13, 2009 - There's a good reason the new 280 Sundeck shares a strong family resemblance with its closest "siblings," including the just-launched 260 Sundeck and the 290 Sundeck. It's because Sea Ray knows a thing or two about identifying, defining and refining those traits that propel the dreams of marine enthusiasts.
"Our extensive, ongoing dialogue with owners helps us to create boats that not only meet our customers' expectations for satisfaction, but also incorporate the features and capabilities that excite them to get out on the water," said Rob Noyes, vice president of marketing for Sea Ray.
The 280 is a prime example of the company's progressive development in action. This big family fun boat strikes a pitch-perfect balance between function, style and innovation with its abundant seating and storage, sporty good looks and many "gee-whiz" features. "Our designers never cease to amaze me," said Noyes. "They hit the mark with this boat and created exactly what we wanted."
Topping the list for smart thinking are amenities such as the cockpit wet center - which has a stainless-steel sink, cooler storage and optional gas grill - and the multi-functional "sun gate" seating system that converts to four different configurations. It works like this: The backrest of the aft lounger is split and the two sections pivot fore or aft, together or individually, to allow customization depending on seating desires. Create a giant sun pad, a fore/aft-facing transom seat or even two facing loungers. An in-floor cooler, cup holders and optional transom stereo remote turn this area into a veritable water patio.
As with the new 260, the 280 also has a stern swim platform with slip-resistant rubber inserts and a transom locker for storing skis and wakeboards. This means no more dripping water all over the cockpit and bonking people in the head with your gear. There's a second swim platform with concealed ladder at the nose. With its big dimensions and beam-forward design, the 280 has a bow fit for world-class sunbathing (add optional filler cushions to create a massive sun pad).
Two bucket seats with flip-up thigh rises serve the captain and navigator, and an L-shaped lounger provides plenty of seating for guests at the removable cockpit table, which has designated storage. While we're on the subject of storage, it's everywhere: beneath the bow lounges, under the helm, in the leather-textured side panels, in the bow and cockpit floor. The enclosed fiberglass head compartment is large enough to act as a changing room without causing contortions, and has a sink, vanity, mirror, light and portable head (a pump-out or VacuFlush® system with holding tank are options).
At its core, the 280 is still a sport boat, which is why it comes with a sleek helm setup, digital throttle and shift, and heart-pounding MerCruiser® 350 Magnum® MPI Bravo® III (300 hp - 224 kW). Owners get SmartCraft® instruments with diagnostic features, a switch panel with lighted chrome toggles and legend backlighting, and power-assisted tilt steering - all housed in a unique "bullet-style" dash. Add a removable chartplotter with road and waterways software to simplify driving on and off the lake.
Other options allow owners to fine-tune their Sundeck to suit their particular boating style: thru-hull exhaust, air compressor for water toys, rope/chain windlass with anchor, water-sports tower, ski mirror. Power choices range up to a 496 Magnum HO Bravo III (425 hp - 317 kW).
Naturally, when boaters purchase a 280 Sundeck they also become a member of the Sea Ray Owners Club, which allows for wallet-pleasing benefits like insurance and towing discounts - even a reduced rate on their next Sea Ray - plus endless fun opportunities like owners' rendezvous and dock parties. That way they can keep their family focused on having fun and reconnecting with each other and the relaxed pace of the outdoors.
